Muscat, July 19 - A mentally ill Omani man was murdered by his brother, assisted by his father, by running over him in a car in Maabela last month.
The father-son duo was arrested by the Royal Oman Police (ROP) for the murder committed on the first day of Eid al Fitr. Juma al Kaabi, Criminal Investigation Department, ROP, said the man purchased a car for the purpose (murder), brought his mentally ill brother to a street in Maabela, ran over him and left him to die.
Investigations revealed the accident wasn’t a hit-and-run type as there were no tyre marks on the road to indicate brakes had been applied. Besides, a small piece of sidelight from the car was found close to the crime spot.
“We tried to match it with the missing vehicle. We identified the car and its owner, who happened to be the victim’s brother,” Al Kaabi explained.
When he was confronted with the evidence, he confessed to the crime besides admitting his father was aware of his nefarious plan.
He said his father had helped him get rid of the offending vehicle by breaking it down and dumping the parts into a wadi.
“The duo committed the crime because they felt he was a burden to the family,” said Al Kaabi.
The ROP arrested them and handed them over to Public Prosecution for further legal procedures.
